Collaborate

Members share the work of running the gallery by participating in diverse, intergenerational teams to install exhibitions, carry out marketing and fundraising plans, staff the gallery during open hours, and manage all aspects of the business, gaining industry experience of many kinds.

Through dues payments, members also share the cost of renting the gallery space and employing a small staff.

Exhibit

During an 18-month contract period, members are expected to propose a solo exhibition—sharing the total gallery space with other solo and/or group exhibitions—and may participate in group shows both at the gallery and offsite.

Emerging Artist Program (EAP)

In 2018, we established EAP to provide subsidized opportunities to emerging artists of color with little exhibition experience. Successive competition rounds, with outside jurors, were held in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Today, over 35% of our member artists are participants in the Emerging Artist Program, with the same benefits and obligations of dues-paying members.

Member Benefits

  • All members may sell original artwork, prints, and some other approved items in their flat file drawer for their entire term. In addition, Core members may keep 3 consigned works in the gallery storage racks available to show interested clients, one of which is displayed in the gallery at all times.

All artists get one solo show in the east or west gallery per contract term, with the total space allotted according to their membership tier (Core or Affiliate).

The exhibition schedule evolves from members’ readiness to show rather than a fixed formula allocating time to each member—so you can join and propose a show in the very next 6-month cycle, or wait until your final 6-month cycle to propose your first show.

  • Unlike a commercial gallery, we are not restricted by the requirement of profitability, which encourages artistic freedom among our artists and curators. For example, we do not ask that your works be marketable, trendy, or even recently created—we just want your best work, professionally presented. For some artists, this freedom alone is worth membership dues.

  • Many members join Gallery 110 to get to know and collaborate with other artists. The fastest and best way to feel like you are a part of a community is to jump in and help make something happen! You can make the collective stronger and better and make a difference in the lives of all its members as well as the local arts landscape.

  • You will have the opportunity to represent Gallery 110 at art events, receptions, and more, amplifying our reach as you meet industry insiders and build your reputation as an artist and leader.

Also, the projects and roles you tackle in your Member Hours are often relevant to your career, even if it isn’t in the arts. Teams have been organized to maximize transferring the skills you’ll practice to any nonprofit or for-profit field.

The Gallery Director and/or board officers can testify to the work you’ve performed and be valuable written and verbal references for you in the future.

  • In December, the gallery hosts an all-members group show in addition to a holiday art market that sells unlimited donations.

Other members/curators may request your works for occasional group shows, and new member shows and themed member shows are fairly common, although not guaranteed during your contract.

Outside the gallery, there are likely to be opportunities like our Seattle Art Fair booth in July, among others.
